How it works

Your repayment is 9% of income above your plan's threshold (6% for Postgraduate loans), deducted regardless of your outstanding balance. This tool simulates the balance year by year: interest is added, then a year's repayments are subtracted. If your repayments don't cover the interest, the balance grows and this tool flags that you're unlikely to clear it before the loan is written off, rather than showing a misleadingly long payoff time. If you're self-employed or a director, these repayments are collected through your self-assessment return rather than PAYE.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep repaying even though my balance never falls?

If your income is close to the threshold, your repayments may be smaller than the interest added each year, so the balance can grow even as you keep making payments. Student loans are written off after a set number of years regardless of the remaining balance.

Which plan am I on?

It depends on where and when you studied. Plan 2 covers most English and Welsh undergraduates from 2012 to 2023, Plan 5 covers new starters after that. Check your loan account if unsure.

Does this loan show on my credit file?

No, student loans don't appear on standard credit reference checks and don't affect your credit score.

Can I repay it faster voluntarily?

Yes, voluntary overpayments are allowed, though whether it's worth it depends on your specific plan, interest rate and how likely you are to clear the balance before write-off anyway.
