Illustration only, not a prediction or recommendation. Assumes growth compounds monthly at a constant rate, which real investments never do. Always take regulated advice before investing.
How it works
This tool compounds monthly: the annual growth rate is converted to an equivalent monthly rate, applied to the running balance each month, with your monthly contribution added on top. Over long periods, the gap between what you contribute and what the pot is actually worth, the growth earned, tends to widen, which is the basic case for starting early. This is a mathematical illustration, not a forecast of any real investment. For company profit specifically, see our tax-efficient salary guide on the most efficient way to get money out of a limited company before investing it.
Frequently asked questions
Does this account for fees or tax?
No. This is a simplified growth illustration only. Real investments carry platform and fund charges, and returns may be taxed depending on the wrapper used, none of which is modelled here.
Is a 5% growth rate realistic?
It is a common illustrative assumption, not a guarantee or prediction. Actual investment returns vary year to year and can be negative.
How is monthly compounding calculated?
The annual rate is converted to a monthly rate using (1+annual)^(1/12)-1, then applied to the balance each month before that month's contribution is added.
Can I use this for a pension?
The maths is the same for any regular-contribution investment, including pensions, but see the director pension vs dividend calculator for a comparison specific to company profit.
