You don't have to wait for £90,000

Registration becomes compulsory at the £90,000 threshold, but any business can register voluntarily before that, regardless of turnover. Whether it's worth doing depends almost entirely on who your customers are and how much VAT you pay on your own costs.

When it genuinely saves money

  • Your customers are VAT-registered businesses. They reclaim the VAT you charge, so adding 20% to your invoice costs them nothing, while you get to reclaim VAT on your own purchases
  • You have significant costs with VAT on them. Equipment, materials, professional fees, software, if you're spending heavily on VAT-rated inputs, registration lets you claw that back
  • You're about to make a large purchase. Registering before a big capital spend means reclaiming the VAT on it rather than absorbing it as a cost

When it usually doesn't

  • Your customers are consumers (B2C). They can't reclaim VAT, so registering effectively makes you 20% more expensive unless you eat the cost yourself out of margin
  • You have low VAT-rated costs. If there's little to reclaim, the ongoing admin, quarterly returns, MTD-compliant digital records, outweighs the benefit

Key point: "Looking more established" is sometimes cited as a reason to register voluntarily. It's a real but soft benefit, don't let it override the actual cash-flow maths above, which is usually the deciding factor.

Frequently asked questions

Can any business register for VAT voluntarily?

Yes, any business can register below the £90,000 threshold, there's no minimum turnover requirement for voluntary registration.

Will voluntary registration make my prices less competitive?

Only if your customers can't reclaim VAT. If you sell to VAT-registered businesses, adding VAT costs them nothing. If you sell to consumers, it can make you 20% more expensive unless you absorb the cost.

Can I deregister later if it doesn't work out?

Yes, you can apply to deregister once turnover is reliably below the threshold and it's no longer beneficial, though there are rules around timing and you can't flip registration on and off casually.

What's the biggest reason businesses regret voluntary registration?

Underestimating the admin burden relative to the saving, quarterly returns and MTD-compliant record-keeping are a real ongoing cost if your actual VAT reclaim is small.
